8 Ways to Prolong Your Roof

Trim Plants (Trees and Shrubbery)

prolong your roof

If you have any tree limbs or branches touching your roof, it’s a smart idea to trim it. This is because tree branches can cause a lot of damage to a roof, and they also can cause moss to grow on the roof (which can cause even more damage). If you do this, you will also be able to prevent storm damage – such as a branch falling on top of the roof. So trim your trees and save yourself some time, energy, and worries.

Clean Your Gutters

If you don’t clean your gutters regularly, a lot of problems can occur. Blocked gutters can mean that water is overflowing and running down the outside of your home and eroding the dirt that stabilizes your home’s foundation. Not only that but with all the extra clutter in a gutter, the gutters can pull away from a house and cause major damage to lower deck boards, the roof, and the house. Try to clean your gutters at least twice a year – spring and fall are typically when most homeowners do this.

Watch for Ice Dams

Ice dams are a winter issue and are thick ridges of solid ice that build up over the roof eaves. When you see a lot of icicles building up on your roof, typically, ice dams follow. They happen when snow on the roof is partially melted. Ice Dams can tear off gutters, loosen shingles, and cause water backup (creating leaks and other sorts of damage such as warped floors and sagging ceilings). You attic also becomes a magnet for mold and mildew. So keep an eye out and when it comes time to remove them, check out this website for instructions.

Shingle Problems

Check your yard and roof for missing shingles – also see if you might have cracked or curling shingles. If this is an issue, then you may need to call us to prevent any long term problems. The sooner you fix it, the cheaper and easier the solution will be (and the longer your roof will last).

Inspect Flashing and Skylights

Make sure to also regularly inspect not only the roof and its shingles but the flashing. The flashing includes vent pipes, skylights, chimneys, and, of course, the flashing. This is especially important to do in the spring, long winters can cause flashings to become loose or cracked. If you don’t check the flashing, sometimes rain can enter your home, especially if there’s loose or missing mortar. As to skylights, make sure they’re regularly cleaned so they’re not full of debris (something that often gets easily stuck onto skylights causing discoloration and scratching). Clearing this away regularly allows your skylights to stay strong so they won’t be damaged in future storms.

Inspect Attic

Walk around in your attic and look for any mold that may be beginning to grow in your attic. You may also look for damp spots that would be prone to mold growth. Should you find mold, contact a professional to have it removed.

Install Proper Ventilation

Proper attic and roof ventilation is an overlooked part of roof maintenance, however, it’s to the homeowner’s detriment if they miss out on this. The lack of ventilation or the improper installation of ventilation can lead to a lot of problems such as mildew and mold as well as ice dams. These can lead to even larger problems such as cracked slates and weakened roof decking.

If you install vents properly, you can prolong your roof’s life, minimize the effects of ice damage, and reduce your home’s energy bill all in one fell swoop!

Professionally Inspected

Make sure that the roof is professionally inspected every few years. This allows you to fix or prevent any possible issues easily and timely, especially if small repairs are made as they are needed (such as re-sealing the mortar or flashing).
