As winter releases its grip on the Midwest, your mind might be turning to spring cleaning tasks. After long months of bone-chilling temperatures and frozen precipitation, it’s important that you don’t overlook your home’s roof when creating your spring to-do list. Downed tree limbs, winter-related damage, and other issues can pop up once the snow starts to thaw; make sure your chore list includes some basic precautions for keeping your roof in good shape.
Staying Safe is Priority One
Although there are several signs that you may need roof repair, don’t attempt to go up on the roof or make repairs unless you’re qualified to do so. Always seek assistance from a reliable, local roofing contractor. A qualified roofer will know what they’re looking for; a proper inspection can mean the difference between a stable roof, and one that’s falling to pieces.
The Signs of Damage
There are several ways you can tell if roof repair might be in your immediate future. The signs that a problem may be present include:
- Tree limbs could be hanging over or laying on the roof. This can cause lifted shingles, broken roof structures, and other problems. Walk around the exterior of your home and look up at the roof to see if you can spot any limbs that could be problematic.
- Leaf litter and other debris can gather in the valleys of your roof. While you’re looking for tree limbs, take the time to step far enough back from your home to see the peaks and valleys of the roof. Visually assess whether debris could be causing issues.
- Moss, mold, and algae can grow on shingles, causing them to weaken over time. The signs of these types of damage may not be apparent from the ground, so it’s best to ask a roofer to look for them during an inspection.
Even if you look very carefully, not all roofing problems can be seen from the ground. Failure to have any damage repaired may lead to extensive problems, and even whole-roof replacement well before you might expect.
