How to prepare for emergency roof problems

A roof emergency can happen any time of the day or night. It is a good idea to be prepared for the three major roof scenarios to help minimize damage until a professional roofing contractor can get to your home and help with your emergency roof repair.

A Leaky Roof

There are a few different reasons you could have a leaky roof.

  • Storm Damage
  • Natural Wear and Tear
  • Animal Damage

When this happens, it is important to do your best to minimize the damage inside your home until a contractor can get to your home and fix it. Move all furniture away from the leaking area, go into the attic to determine where the leak is and use buckets or pans to prevent further water from damaging the ceiling. You can be prepared with buckets and tarps to minimize damage.

Wind or Hail Damage

High winds are capable of damaging roofing materials and tearing them completely off. Hail will not only break tiles and shingles, but larger hail has been known to hit hard enough to make holes through the roofing materials. In order to be prepared for wind or hail damage, be sure to have your roof inspected before the storm season starts. Your roofing contractor will be able to define any potential areas that are in need of repair before a storm weakens them.

Tree or Debris Damage

There are many scenarios where trees can sway, fall or drop debris onto your roof. Storms, wind and even animals’ nesting can weaken trees and limbs, creating a potential hazard for your roof and home. The best way to be prepared for this is to keep trees trimmed back away from your home and roof. Removing the limbs that may potentially fall on your home will minimize the chance of damage. Have your trees checked by an expert if they are starting to drop dead limbs. Trees die slowly from the inside and it is not always evident right away. An expert will be able to identify the trees that need to be removed before they fall on your home.
